music making you woozy?

The connection between music and emotions

Here’s why!

What set me off on this post was a lovely but an extremely cliched Bollywood song!

It was annoying to feel mushy when I am not even in that state or stage of life!

And no points for guessing, there were many like me who had fallen sentimental and posted comments on the video..

On the other hand, my daughter who grew up on western music, feels nothing to these beats! In fact she finds them dull and sad!

Got me wondering why music can make us feel so deeply?? It would take immense effort not to feel woozy in the head and dreamy!

It’s not just the melody or lyrics—it’s because music taps directly into the emotional center of our brain, the limbic system. This is the part of our brain that handles emotions and memories, and when a song plays, it can instantly bring back moments from our past, sparking a wave of feelings.

Different elements of a song, like tempo, melody, and rhythm, can also trigger specific emotions. Think of an upbeat song that fills you with energy, or a slow, soft tune that brings a sense of calm or even sadness. These cues are often culturally coded too, meaning that over time, we associate certain sounds with certain emotions.

But it’s not just about the music itself—it’s about the personal connections we make. Songs can remind us of significant moments or people in our lives, and with that comes a flood of the emotions tied to those memories. Music especially is a friend to the broken heart! In times of dark dispair of a broken heart, there is nothing like music that makes you feel understood and seen!

Some researchers even suggest that our brains have mirror neurons, which allow us to empathize with the emotions in the music, as if we’re feeling what the composer or performer felt.

Music, in the end, becomes more than just sound—it’s a deeply emotional experience that resonates with our personal stories. Next time you feel sentimental when your favorite song plays, know that it’s your brain and heart (well, thoughts and emotions) working together to relive those precious memories.

Having said this, I am still going to listen to all kinds of music. This will include mushy songs leaving me woozy and dreamy eyed once again 😅
